Massage Therapy Q & A

by Bradley Mouroux, DC, CCSP, CPAK

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy uses direct tissue manipulation to help relieve inflammation and irritation and to improve circulation so toxins can be eliminated and natural healing responses are stimulated. Massage therapy uses a variety of different techniques depending on the symptoms and objectives of the patient to relieve pain and other symptoms, and it’s widely used to promote healing following an injury and to relieve pain from chronic conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic regional pain syndrome. Massage is highly adaptable and can be used in different areas of the body including the back and limbs. It’s also beneficial for relieving chronic stress and anxiety, including stress before or following surgery, and it’s frequently used to help athletes recover after a competition as well as enhance performance.

What types of massage are available?

Perhaps the most common and widely recognized type of massage is the Swedish massage technique, which uses a series of long strokes to promote circulation and achieve general relief from stress and discomfort. Other techniques include:

  • trigger point massage designed to “break up” muscle knots and adhesions that can cause localized pain, tenderness, and loss of movement
  • deep tissue massage that uses stronger pressure to reach deep layers of tissue to relieve pain and inflammation
  • sports massage that can be customized to suit specific needs of athletes
  • geriatric massage for seniors, including those with osteoporosis, arthritis, and other spine-related conditions
  • prenatal massage to relieve the pain and strain of pregnancy and prepare women for delivery

Other types of massage are also available.

Does massage therapy hurt?

Some patients may experience some degree of discomfort when releasing muscle knots or during deep tissue massage as sore, tender tissues are gently palpated to encourage healing in these areas. Gentler massage techniques like Swedish massage, prenatal massage, or geriatric massage typically cause no discomfort. During each session, it’s very important to let the therapist know when pressure is too intense so a lighter touch can be used.

Can massage be used with physical therapy or other chiropractic treatments?

Absolutely. In fact, massage can be an ideal complement to many chiropractic treatments, helping to improve and enhance results for better overall health and improved quality of life.
